P.R.I.S.M. (Playwork Research In Schools at Midday)
The P.R.I.S.M. Project has been set up to investigate the PhD research question: 'Does adopting a playwork
approach change the way that children play?'
P.R.I.S.M. is based on the thesis that children, lunchtime supervisors and those who support and manage them
will have happier, more playful playtimes if adults on the school playground use playwork theory and practice in
their role.
Project scope
With the support of North Herts District Council, the project will involve twenty junior and primary schools
across North Herts between October 2010 and May 2011. The schools will receive up to four days training and support
for lunchtime supervisors which will be organised in three local clusters. The aim of the training will be to
introduce playwork theory and practice and to enable lunchtime supervisors to put playwork skills into practice
on the playground.
Research design
The study is quasi-experimental in design and will use mixed methods to measure the adoption of playwork
skills in lunchtime supervisors and the amount of play engaged in by children during lunchtimes.
